I had the chance to participate at the dash boost event on Friday 20th September, it was a really great event. I applied to this event, with a Google from, I had the chance to be selected. 

 

The dash boost event is an hackathlon, we are several team and we have to find a design answer to a company issues. 

First we begin the day with a big breakfast during with I meet my team, I was with sera, a Finnish girl, who studying design in Helsinki, Ibrahim, a Turku student in economy and Kim an exchange student from Seoul in south Korea who currently studying mathematic

So during the breakfast we spoke together about where we come from, our studies, our interest about the design, it was a pleasure to meet new student again. 

 

OUR CHALLENGES : 

 

After we had a presentation of all the company, 3 differents companies : our team have to work with SANDVIK : Sandvik is a leading manufacturer of underground mining equipment with focus on innovation, safety and operator wellbeing. Turku site is homebase for Sandvik underground hard rock loaders and dump trucks. Sandvik represents: More than 10 000th units produces, Customers around the words, 550 employees and significant employer, technology developer and manufacturer in the area. 

After the presentation of the firm, it explain their day challenge for us. We had to reflex on these sentences : 

"An ergonomic environment is increasingly important in modern workplaces. In the mining industry, the machine features and performance are usually the focus, while effort on the condition for the operators spending time in the hot, dark and dangerous mines is secondary. Sandvik want to break this trend and find ways to create a better environment for the operators.”

And found a solution to design way to answer to theses questions : 

• What would be ways to increase the ergonomics of modern mining vehicles to keep operators healthy, happy and safe?

• What could a new kind of operator interface (HMI) look like? What could be done to reduce the impact stress and strain (both mental or physical) on the operator?

I found the issues very interesting because both it was technical and way of design. After we had to think about a solution and for this we had the help of a coach and the engineer of sandvick.

STEP OF CREATION :

The different step of the creation of our idea was first to visit the cabin that were put outside of the campus to project and realize the real size of the cabin and the issue. After we did brainstorming of our ideas, we did mind maps, we use post it and put all our idea in our sheet, we debate about what we think, we discuss about our ideas, we search information on the web, we take a look of some ppt about sandvik.

On my side, I paste here some idea that I had : 

• Recreate the atmosphere of the day life job with artificial light who changed during the day to don’t feel to much the darkness 

• Create a completely cabin who move and be rotable , all the command the sit turn on the same time, with big windows 360° panorama

• We can imagine a sound system to put music but when they are instruction we stop the music 

• Nothing on the floor and delate pedal because It’s not good for the back 

• We need to design the cockpit more confortable and think less technical thing about the machine but focus on the atmosphere and imagine us like the driver , to put us at his place all the day on the sit and in the darkness 

• Think about technology and mirror or infrared camera 

• A cabin in semi-circle. And window in same shape. 

 

 

We keep the idea of the cabin in semi-circle, without pedal and command with a 90° degree of rotation.

WHAT I THINK 

 

It was very exiting to see a projet grow up like this, to create a solution together to mobilized our knowledge in different field.  

I really like our team, because we come from very different horizon, and we have different school background, different skills so we create something very interesting and new I think. 

 

I adore the way to work like this, to debate, discuss, I really like work with a group I think be with several personal in a real strength. Because, idea grow up more quickly and some idea of other impulse our own. 

 

During this day I think I mobilized a lots of skill like projet management, creative skill like drawing, and learn to sum up more my idea, to listen other speak and explain their point of view. It was rewarding to deal a projet from start to beginning. To present it in front of judges. 

To the futur maybe I will can be more active in the team and daring to give more  idea and debate more in English. 

 

To Finish I want to talk about the atmosphere during this event, I really liked it because first it was very well organized from start with application to beginning with thank you e-mail. I’m very grateful to had the chance to participated to this event because it was super. There were a lots of different  activities like yoga ( It was my first time), I drew with some « artist » in a special room, we ate lots of food , because there had many sponsor like reed-bull  or brand of cookie. The decorating was very nice, very cosy, trendy, relax, with neon, plants, sofa… It was a beautiful day, a great mix between work and fun. I think they deal with this mix perfectly because we worked with fun, having a good time.
