Training about news

by team elenum

The topic of the elenum team training on October 3rd was news !

In order to prepare this training as well as possible, we were all responsible for learning about one of these three topics.

  • The Brexit

  • The carbon footprint

  • The Finnish Government

I have chosen to learn more about the carbon footprint and how to reduce it. Here are the articles I found on this subject :

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/7-instant-ways-to-reduce-your-carbon-footprint_b

https://blogs.ei.columbia.edu/2018/12/27/35-ways-reduce-carbon-footprint/

The training was structured as follows:

First of all, the coach reminded us of the essential principles to be respected when talking about current events. Because indeed it is a sensitive subject where opinions diverge :

  1. respect

  2. honest speach

  3. listen

  4. wait

Then we talked about the different ways to access information through a dialogue circle and feedback. We can use Radio, TV, newspapers.

Then we started the discussions on the various topics by applying the principle of the aquarium: We put 5 chairs: 4 for the 4 students who have prepare to practice on the subject and a gap is available for those who want to come take part in the debate.

We talked about 30 minutes about each topic.

By way of summary for our debate, we can say that: the problematic "how to decrease the carbon foot print" is a big currently issue. For example we saw at for the summit of the environment at new york. Greta kumberg was there, she's a brave young lady. We think that the effort have to be made collective and individually.

We thought about some idea to decreased this food print: separate waste, use electric car, make the brand more conscious, travel more eco friendly.

Then we debriefed on the training. We said that: The coach has used a good method, it's very important to debate and exchange. But what we found less well was that it is difficult to dare to talk about a subject when you are outside the circle because the discussion goes very fast. People outside feel excluded quickly. The solution might be to have a discussion with those who have studied the subject and then, after 10 minutes, open the circle so that everyone can speak freely

To finish, we said why it is important to stay informed?

To take a critical look, exchange opinions, reflect and debate. It is very enriching and essential for our professional life.

My opinion on this training ?

I really appreciated the format of this training on the one hand. I found it very original and innovative to involve us so much.

I really liked talking about current topics because it's true that as an Erasmus student we are a little disconnected and we don't follow the news much anymore. I learned new things about environmental issues. However, I had trouble following the discussion on the Finnish government because I had no basis.

To conclude this training was very enriching both in knowledge but also in learning method.
